Oh where to start:
<blockquote>Wow. Ok since when is it ok to have our food "enhanced" by science to "improve" nutritional value? </blockquote>
Humans have been modifying the genetic code of plants for thousands of years by cross pollination and selective breeding of desired offspring. The tomato you are eating today is not natural, the banana you are eating today is not natural, all the food have been optimized for increased yields and quality. The only difference is that today we know exactly what the genetic code we want to modify and this does not require trial and error anymore.

<blockquote>It's funny that with all the GMO's and new technology that people don't seem to be getting any healthier do they? That's because they are not. </blockquote>
My nutrition is 1000% better than my ancestors 100 years ago and my sons nutrition will be better than mine because of the continual increased quality of foods. I think the continually extended life span of humans over the last 1000 years shows that people are healthier.

<blockquote>If you are telling me that eating GMO golden rice is better for me or my children than food grown from proper farming techniques and mineral rich soil?</blockquote>
With the continually expanding human population the third world counties will need food that is resistant to global warming, bad weather and still have a high nutritional quality.

<blockquote>Can you show me the science that proves that GMO's are safe for human consumption? How strict are they regulated?</blockquote>
Your tone takes on a very anti-science approach, so I do not know what science you are looking for. The history of genetically modifying foods is more than evidence that it is effective and safe. Science is not trying to kill anyone or destroy the world the scientific method allows for the opportunity of peer review and objective testing of any new discoveries. Taking the time to understanding the science allows a person to understand how the world works and destroys the fear mongering put out in the media that try to scare people in getting some attention.

I live near a chiropractic clinic and I recently glanced at the list of illnesses that they claim to treat. Just looking at the "A's" they are telling people that they can treat ADHD, allergies, and asthma. There is no evidence that I can find in quite extensive searches of the research literature to support these health claims. In addition, this corporation consistently advises people against seeking out treatments that are based upon evidence-based medicine.

These people do harm in at least 5 ways: they profit from bogus therapies; they shrink the pot of money available for health care; they harm people directly by their sometimes dangerous procedures; they promote magical, pseudoscience thinking; they scare sick people away from effective therapies.

In terms of action at some point letters/pressure on government can be effective. My belief however is that they rely on counting letters, as opposed reading them and evaluating the quality of the arguments and evidence contained.

It is difficult to know the best way for this harm to be addressed.
My guess is that we should probably try to generate some public interest and outrage about what is being foisted on them by chiropractic corporations. Only then might there be some significant number of people opposed to them.

We might try to organize some effort locally among those who are dissatified with chiropractic services perhaps acting with the Federal Health Fraud agency http://www.bureaudelaconcurrence.gc.ca/eic/site/cb-bc.nsf/eng/h_00020.html.

Nice new look. Just wondering though, will the new site have a place where we can organize meetups?

Cheers.

Hi James,

I realize this isn't the proper space, but I didn't see any other way to contact the site. So, the old forum is dead? I was hoping to advertise the second monthly meet-up at the Blarney Stone. We had such a lovely time in November and I want to ensure we keep it rolling.

Our second meeting will be on the second Sunday of the month (December) at 4pm at the Blarney Stone in Calgary! Hope to see everyone there!

Yes they also offer a great money making career in hypnotherapy. I have the advertisement that I will scan and upload, it is very entertaining.

I got an email from the president of the Lethbridge College last year about the sponsorship of the Alternative Health Care trade show put on at the College. Her response was disappointing at best:

<blockquote>Thank you for your feedback. . . we are always interested in hearing from our community and particularly from our alums.

Our job in post-secondary is to promote critical thinking. . . clearly something you very much support as indicated by your affiliation with Freethinkers.

We hope that our students will be able to distinguish between what is science and what is not. . . as I'm sure you know, there are many alternative medicine options that warrant further exploration and investigation. We want our students to see what's out there and be able to formulate measured opinions. They need to decide for themselves what is fallacy and what is not.

I hope this helps. . .

Cheers!

I responded with asking her about sponsoring a Intelligent Design trade show or a moon landing conspiracy lecture so student could decide for themselves on those issues also however I did no receive a response.

Was anybody aware of the Lethbridge College offering courses in so-called "complementary" therapies? Psychic, touch-therapy, Reiki etc.

Check the "Mind.Body.Home" page at the College site.

Perhaps a few letters of concern to the College may be in order.

Love the the new look - thanks
